More Oil Refineries on the Way

Today the US House of Representatives passed a bill allowing for the construction of more oil refineries in the US. This is good. We have needed more refining capacity for years. We have also needed to be able to shut down dirtier older refineries, but couldn’t.

New refineries will be built with modern technology that is safer for the environment, more efficient, and just plain cleaner than the ones built prior to 1970. In time this will allow for filthy old refineries to be shut down and replaced with new more environmentally friendly ones. This is good ecologically.

More refineries will bring down the cost of fuel and other petroleum products by increasing supply. This will leave more money in consumer’s pockets and relieve the burden of high fuel prices on everyday Americans. This is good economically.

Unfortunately the bill was passed in a way I cannot approve of. Although I personally agree with the bill, and am glad for its’ passing the house I am saddened by what it took.

This bill was voted on many times today. It was voted down many times today. Traditionally this means it did not pass and should be reviewed, revised, and resubmitted for a vote. What happened to day though was that the House leadership demanded continuous revotes on the bill until hesitant Republicans finally wore down and toed the party line. At the first successful vote the issue was closed and the bill was declared to be passed.

This is not the way to conduct business in our Capitol. This piece of chicanery sets a precedent that will bit the Republicans right in the behind as soon as the Democrats have control of the House, and rest assured it will happen one day, Congressional majorities switch all the time. This precedent sets the stage for the forced passing of liberal bills and the repealing of existing conservative laws in the future. This is a tragedy.

It’s too late for this issue, but as a responsible American you must contact your congressman to inform him that stunts like this will not be tolerated by the voters. Our traditions have worked well for centuries and should not be changed lightly.

At least we’re finally getting new oil refineries.
